I feel like one of the most significant contributing factors to the proliferation of wacky Facebook-driven conspiracy theories is boredom. People, especially parents whose kids are at school all day, get bored if they hang around the house with nothing to do, and their minds can wander in the most detrimental ways. If I had to clean a house all day and spend 5 hours a week in the school pickup line, I might also start believing that our computers are releasing damaging chemicals into our skin too! It's easy to fall into this world of conspiracies if a huge online group of moms in your area necessitates belief in wacky ideas to be in community with them. I can't imagine it's easy to find friends in your suburban community's mom group if you ardently believe in the necessity of doctors.
