If I had to describe the majority of memes using only one word, I think I might pick 'consumable'. For all that there are a wild variety of styles and topics that are covered by these things, the one common denominator is that whatever a meme is about, it's usually trying to give you all its information and humor in one easily digestible bite.
Although it is possible for memes to challenge us, the way that they go about it is small, and cumulative. Also, most of the time their main interest is in making you exhale through your nose a little harder, or sending them to a friend. It's a humble ambition that we are more than happy to help out with. We all need the distraction sometimes, or indeed most of the time. If only more things in life were as simple as idly scrolling through a number of funny images.
